A Boy in Divis

Childhood in Conflict
Learning the terrain
Michael grows up amid gun battles, army searches, and burned homes. He finds pigeons in the ruins and learns to move through danger with a child’s resourcefulness.
Loss changes the household
After Arthur dies and Jean disappears, Michael’s ordinary anchors vanish. The family is isolated at the moment it most needs protection.
Escape from the Orphanage

A Child Runs Home
Resistance to removal
Michael is sent to Nazareth Lodge and repeatedly escapes back to West Belfast. He is angry at the suggestion that his mother abandoned him.
A new placement
Authorities move him to De La Salle Boys’ Home in County Down. The shift takes him away from the city and from the possibility that Jean might return.
Abuse at Kircubbin

The Institution Fails Him
Violence inside care
At the boys’ home, children face beatings, bullying, and sexual abuse. Michael is not himself molested, but sees the predatory behavior around him.
Escape becomes defiance
Michael and Tucker repeatedly run away and are returned and punished. Their effort to get back to Belfast reflects loyalty to a mother they still expect to see.
Lisnevin as Refuge

A Different Kind of Facility
Secure placement
After repeated escapes, Michael is sent to Lisnevin, a juvenile detention institution. Its fences and isolation rooms appear punitive, but the environment is more stable than earlier homes.
A small attachment
He befriends Sister Frances, who offers kindness and remains in contact after moving away. A modest gesture helps him experience care without threat.
Leaving at Sixteen

An Abrupt Emancipation
The door opens
At sixteen, Michael leaves institutional care with little preparation for work, housing, or adult life. He has spent a substantial part of childhood being moved between authorities.
A life built by hand
He eventually forms a family, works, and keeps racing pigeons. His life shows resilience but does not end the search for what happened to his mother.
